Review: The Stranger (2020)

Series Review: The Stranger (2020) Seasons: 1 Episodes: 8 Description:  Follows the lives of suburban families whose secrets and lies are made public by the appearance of a stranger. First of all: The accents are so lovely and Richard Armitage is so hot!  I love this show. It starts slowly, the events don't seem to be connected. The secrets revealed are often not the  secrets one would expect in typical shows like these, some are actually shocking. From faking pregnancies to hiding bodies - everything is there. During the show I was afraid that it would turn into a typical show about secrets but it didn't. That's a huge plus, the story in this show is new. I liked how they built the tension throughout the episodes for the big unraveling and reveal of the connections. The stranger is also a beautiful sight, the actress has a very handsome face and she sticks out in the small town. We mostly see middle aged people and kids, not many people in their 20's like her. There

Review: Bloodshot (2020)

Movie Review: Bloodshot (2020) Length: 109 minutes Description: Ray Garrison, a slain soldier, is re-animated with superpowers.  Bloodshot is an action movie, with Vin Diesel as the lead role. First off, I love Vin Diesel so I might be biased. It's about a soldier, who dies and comes back to life through some kind of nanotechnology. The movie has everything  a cliché action movie has: A muscular soldier, a company with a stupid name and lots of stunts and fire. What's sort of different about this movie, is for example the soldiers invulnerability. He gets hurt but he can recharge and go back to his previous state. Throughout the movie, there's a really unexpected plottwist that results in having some timeloops, with significant changes. That is what makes this movie different and I liked watching it. It does get a little confusing at times, the viewer would need to devote some attention to the screen. I have watched lots of movies with great action heroes and soldiers and

Review: Paranormal (2020)

Series Review: Paranormal (2020) Seasons: 1 Episodes: 6 Description:  Set in the 1960s, the series, packed with mystery and suspense, depicts the adventures of PARANORMAL leading character Dr. Refaat Ismail, a single hematologist who finds himself faced with a series of supernatural events.  The series is Egyptian, which pleasantly surprised me. I didn't really research the series before watching, I just wanted to watch something while having breakfast aaand... binged all the way through. It is only the third Middle Eastern Netflix Original and I liked it a lot. I love learning more about other cultures and Middle Eastern cultures are somewhat rare in popular series. Dr. Ismail is a fascinating character, he has trouble expressing his feelings and his personality is marked by stubbornness. I felt sorry for him most of the time, as a kid he sucked at playing hide and seek so his friends made fun of him. Even as an adult, he is stuck in an arranged engagement and he always seems to

Review: To The Lake (2019)

Series Review: To The Lake (2019) Seasons: 1 Episodes: 8 Description:  A terrible plague strikes and a group decides to risk their lives. Humanity struggles to survive as they face the end of their civilization   To the Lake is a Russian series about a deadly disease and a group of people who try to survive. The group is diverse, there are 3 small families. The dynamics are very complex and hard for me to explain but I'll try anyway: Family 1 is Sergey, his father, his current girlfriend and their autistic son. Family 2 is Sergeys ex and their son. Family 2 is a good friend of Sergey, his pregnant wife and their daughter who has issues with alcohol. The original name of the series is Epidemya , a fitting but predictable title. To the Lake refers to the groups destination. Sergeys father transformed a stranded boat on an island into a habitable place and he wants to lead the group there from Moscow to escape the deadly virus.  This deadly virus has some very easily recognizable

Review: His House (2020)

Movie Review: His House (2020) Length: 1 hour and 33 minutes Description:  A refugee couple makes a harrowing escape from war-torn South Sudan, but then they struggle to adjust to their new life in an English town that has an evil lurking beneath the surface. I watched this movie without any prior research about it, I just started watching. I had no expectations, I only knew that ghosts would appear at some point. And boy, they did. As the description says,  a South Sudanese couple starts a new life in England after a long and terrible journey. On that journey they lost a girl and she seems to be haunting the couples new house. This happens only in dark spaces and the couple is in denial at first, but when they discover they both see the same impossible things, they slowly start to realize that it might be real. The ghosts in your average horror movie usually have one thing in common: They are white. These ghosts aren't white, they are black which makes complete sense. That is, e

Review: Chambers (2019)

Series Review: Chambers (2019) Seasons: 1 Episodes: 10 Description:  A woman survives a heart transplant and begins to develop different personality traits. Chambers  is a series about a girl who gets the heart of another girl. The two girls have/had totally different lives, one is rich, white and very popular while the other is native American, lives in a bad neighborhood and doesn't have many friends. A series like this could have gone many ways, it could have been a total cliché with things like falling in love with the same people the dead girl loved or developing a connection to the parents. It surprised me, although there were hints of those cliché things, there were many unexpected things as well. What I like a lot about the series in general is how it shows the contrast between a rich, white family in the suburbs and a poor, Navajo family in a somewhat criminal neighborhood. The series shows many hints of native American culture, especially later on in the season. As I am
