Review: The Umbrella Academy (2020)

Series review: The Umbrella Academy (2020) Seasons: 2 Episodes: 20 Description:  Reunited by their father's death, estranged siblings with extraordinary powers uncover shocking family secrets -- and a looming threat to humanity.  I watched both seasons right when they appeared on Netflix, and once I started I binged them. This story about a group of special children, who got adopted and grew up in the Umbrella Academy is original and well-written. Once I finished season one I couldn't wait for season two. Both seasons have a similar story but totally different settings. They have to prevent the world from ending. At the beginning of both seasons, we know that there is a great threat to the world but we don't know what causes it. After season one, you might suspect what causes it in season two, only to be surprised. I am usually not a big fan of time travel but in The Umbrella Academy  it didn't bother me. It's still complicated but somehow easier to understand and

Review: Requiem (2018)

Series Review: Requiem Seasons: 1 Episodes: 6 Description: When her mother commits suicide, a cellist's life is turned upside down by mysterious questions raised about her past. I just finished watching Requiem  last night so the memory is still fresh while I'm writing this. I started watching right after I finished  The Queen's Gambit . The series begins with the introduction of Tilly, who is a famous cellist. Her mother commits suicide in a gruesome way and Tilly goes to Wales to chase after her mother's past. I loved the first episode. The ones after that are a bit slow but the plot is surprising. I do love some good plottwists so I admired that. There is a lot of death and near-death in the show, almost too much. For most of the time the viewer will wonder, if this is actually a horror or thriller series. The supernatural elements start out very subtle and only in the end the question is answered.  There is a lot of drama between the characters. They have strong

Review: The Alienist: Angel of Darkness (2020)

Series review: The Alienist: Angel of Darkness Seasons: 2 Episodes: 18 Description:  Newspaper illustrator John Moore meets with criminal psychologist (alienist) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler to investigate a serial killer in New York during the late 19th century.  The second season of The Alienist is as good, if not better than the first. Set in gloomy New York of the late 19th century, an alienist, a female detective and a news reporter try to solve a series of hideous crimes. The crimes in the first series were brutal, but the murder and kidnapping of babies is the most brutal thing I can think of. The series builds tension fast, and holds it. Just when the viewer is led to believe that the crime is solved, a twist occurs and more investigative work is required. The series gives some attention to women's suffrage and shows the fairly emancipated Sara, who worked with the Alienist, Kreizler, in the first season and now opened her own detective agency with female employees only.  The comb

Review: The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)

Series Review: The Haunting of Bly Manor Seasons: 1 Episodes: 9 Description:  Dead doesn't mean gone. An au pair plunges into an abyss of chilling secrets in this gothic romance from the creator of "The Haunting of Hill House." Many horror fans had been waiting for The Haunting of Bly Manor  after the great succes of The Haunting of Hill House.  The latest series has many similarities to the first one, the same writers and producers and some of the cast. Yet, they are two totally different series. Both series aren't chronological and use flashbacks to tell their stories. I am a huge fan of both the first and second series because of the good story, quality and acting. Horror fans know, the genre has only few really good movies and shows. Most of what you find in the horror category has either bad acting, low budget or a predictable, unoriginal story. Bly Manor has all the good stuff, great actors and an original story. An au pair gets tasked with the care of two or

Review: Barbarians (2020)

Series Review: Barbarians (2020) Seasons: 1 Episodes: 6 Description: Torn between the mighty empire that raised him and his own tribal people, a Roman officer's conflicted allegiances lead to an epic historical clash. Barbarians is about the Germanic people, set in AD 9. The tribes are being tormented by the Romans and the Germanic tribes strike back in an epic battle.  Being a huge Vikings  fan, I had been looking forward to the release of Barbarians.  I was promised, that it would be even more brutal and just as well-made. To be bold, I didn't enjoy watching the series as much. I couldn't keep my attention to the screen and my mind wandered while watching. The brutality showed itself in the sacrifice of children and heads on spikes, which reminded me of the first season of Game of Thrones.   What I admire about the series is the use of language. The Romans mostly speak Latin and the barbarians speak German. Most of the cast is German too, adding to the authenticity of t

Review: The Queen's Gambit (2020)

Hello everyone! My name is Shae, I am a kinkster, and I write reviews on series and movies. I am 22 years old and live in the Netherlands. I am a student and don't have many hobbies except... Watching Netflix! I frequently recommend shows and movies to people and give my opinion on them. Kink won't play a very big part in most reviews but it is a part of me and therefore it will shine through in my opinion and perspective. Thank you for giving me a chance by reading this, I hope you enjoy! Mini Series review: The Queen's Gambit (2020) Seasons: 1 Episodes: 7 Description:  In a 1950s orphanage, a young girl reveals an astonishing talent for chess and begins an unlikely journey to stardom while grappling with addiction. The series starts with a shocking scene, which immediately caught my attention. The scene shows a car accident, followed by the drive to the orphanage.  In the orphanage, Beth is immediately exposed to drugs. Jolene, a girl who also lives there, tells her to ta
